Best Ways to Kill Fleas

Is your house overrun with fleas?  Try these tips.  Flea eggs can take up to 8 months to hatch, so be prepared for a battle.

Items

1

Go to the Veterinarian

(or to your local pet-store)

Prescription flea medicine often works better than the generic brands bought at Wal-Mart, and pet stores often carry a wider arsenal.
1

Fine-Toothed Comb

Fleas can be removed from animal fur with a fine-toothed comb.  Drop the fleas in hot soapy water to kill them.
1

Garlic

Fleas hate the taste of garlic and eating garlic may prevent you from getting flea bites.  However, garlic can harm cats if they eat it.
1

Flea Shampoo

Give your pets a bath using pet-approved flea shampoo.  However, make sure not to use flea drops (like Frontline or Advantage) for at least two days afterward.  They bond to the oil layer of the skin and won't work if it's not there.
1

Vacuum Regularly

Vacuuming sucks up flea eggs and flea feces that flea larvae use for food.  Give special focus your pet's bedding and make sure to dispose of the vacuumed debris immediately (outside the house).

Place a tin of water near a night light.  While not as effective as other means, when it gets dark the fleas will go toward the light and fall in the water, often drowning.
